Trademarks are protected only in the countries in which they are registered. Therefore, companies should have trademark registration which they have commercial activity. There are various registration systems for trademark registration.

International Trademark Registration is a system that allows applications to be made to 106 countries and regions in total through the WIPO - World Intellectual Property Office, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Turkey has been included in this system in 1999.

International Trademark applications may cover some or all of the member countries of Madrid Protocol. Applicant must have a basic trademark application/registration in origin country.

This application system is run by the EUIPO - European Union Intellectual Property Office, headquartered in Alicante, Spain. It is possible to have a trademark registration covering 27 European Union countries* with a single application.

OAPI is a community with headquarters in Yaoundé, Cameroon, that enables simultaneous registration in 17 countries which do not have their own national Trademark Offices.

OAPI members: Benin, Guinea, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Niger, Chad, Central African Republic, Senegal, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Togo, Ivory Coast, Congo, Comoros, Gabon, Mali.

National application is not possible in any of these countries.

ARIPO is a organization that English speaking African countries came together in 1976 to create a common harmony in the field of Intellectual Property.

The countries of this organizsation are Botswana, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Sao Tome and Principe and Zimbabwe.

While applications can be made for all of these countries at the same time, it is also possible to select individual countries, unlike EUTM and OAPI.
